Julia Brendel – Designer Fabrics & Soft Furnishings

25th February 2014

For beautiful designer fabrics and soft furnishings steeped in cultural influences look no further than online shop, Julia Brendel. Headed up by creative textile designer Julia Brendel herself, the exclusive collection presents a wealth of woven designer fabrics across five collections that extends to include a beautiful array of cushions, tablecloths, lampshades and throws in a wide choice of sizes. Amorously designed to echo Julia's passion for folk designs, costumes, lace and embroidery, fabrics are richly immersed in intricate patterns and refined colour palettes that pay homage to a creative fusion of different cultural influences. With superior quality, the materials evoke an impeccable handmade feel and are predominantly created by Master Craftsmen in traditional mills in the UK. From lavish silks and textured chenille to cotton, linen and silk blends, designs are meticulously created with the technique of jacquard weaving which, unlike print, allows most fabric ranges to be reversible.

"ORIGINS" IS YOUR FIRST COLLECTION. CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT THE RANGE?

"Origins" stands for beginning, start, genesis, and birth. My Hungarian and Polish roots lay at the core of the five new sub-collections of fabrics with influences drawn from different cultures, beliefs, languages, patterns, flavours and scents. It is driven from my passion for folk designs, costumes, lace and embroidery. Fabric called Kurpie is inspired by embroidery on ladies shirts from a Polish Region called "Kurpie". Medallions came from making some cutouts the way people used to fold pieces of paper, cut out shapes and then the unraveled paper would show some amazing and often complex designs. Each sub-collection has its origin and special place in my personal experiences.

WHERE DO YOU DRAW YOUR CREATIVE INSPIRATION?

Different sources such as travel, events, news, books anything might trigger the thought process. One of my new inspirations came to me in a dream. I woke up one morning with a whole new vision from A-Z.

WHAT'S YOUR FASCINATION WITH FOLK AND CRAFT?

It goes back to my late teens. I always admired the skill, complexity and time spent in the old days on every day objects. It often appeals to me more than pieces of art locked in museums. There is this romantic feel as well about many beautiful folk costumes with their amazing lace and embroidery. You can imagine girls sitting together with their threads and tambours, no TV, phones, Facebook - just creativity and skill, Art being created on a daily basis. There was no cheapness back then, if something was beautiful it was hand made and lasted for centuries. I guess these values are still current, even more so in our era of plastic.

SUMMARISE YOUR DESIGN STYLT.

My style is eclectic .I am constantly fascinated by things I see, mainly when traveling, but not exclusively. I like the old and new merged or coexisting in the same space. It's an elegant mélange I would like to think…
